Anything small, tidy, and easy to hand over was always going to be the first thing AI made harder to defend.

The work that survives tends to be the stuff that still needs judgement, taste, or someone to sit with the mess properly.

Anything small, well-scoped, and digital is on borrowed time. What's most defensible is anything complex that requires expertise and taste.' That's the sentence that applies way beyond Upwork. I'm watching the same split happen in CPG consulting. The founder who used to pay someone $500 to build a margin calculator does it herself in Claude now. The founder who needs someone to look at her channel economics and tell her which accounts are killing her business still needs a human who's seen enough P&Ls to recognize the pattern. AI ate the task. It made the judgment more valuable. The people in trouble aren't the ones competing with AI. They're the ones whose entire value was the task and never developed the judgment layer on top of it
